Implementation (CEDAR)

Clinics, Education, Data and Research (CEDAR) supports the National Strategic Plan for Kidney Disease. The KidGen CEDAR Program has been instrumental in supporting and expanding the Renal Genetics Clinics (RGC) Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) model by:

  • delivering and evaluating genomic education to kidney clinicians

  • developing and assessing educational resources in partnership with patients

  • facilitating access to genomic testing for patients

The Renal Genetics Clinic MDT approach means that every kidney patient nominated for genomic testing within the RGC is individually assessed by MDT to ensure that the right genomic test will be performed for the right patient.

The CEDAR program has been funded by the Australian Government from 2020 to 2023.

In this time, KidGen has helped more than 500 kidney patients to undergo genomic testing and significantly contributed to equity in access to genomic testing for First Nations and Torres Strait Islander patients.

Our approach to supporting clinicians with education and resources has led to a diagnostic yield of ~44%. In other words, approximately every second patient with inheritable kidney disease encountered, has obtained a genetic diagnosis.
